She was driven by something unseeable, something that pushed her to the brink of human possibility

On September 26, 2022, Hilaree Nelson, a pioneering ski mountaineer, lost her life in an avalanche during an expedition on Manaslu, the world’s 8th highest peak.
Her untimely passing has left a void in the outdoor and mountaineering community, as Nelson was not only a remarkable athlete but a beacon for women across the globe, inspiring them to break barriers and accomplish incredible feats in the outdoor world.

LEADER OF THE PACK SKI

In Hilaree’s honor, Blizzard created a limited-edition Sheeva 10 and a children’s book, “Leader of the Pack: The Hilaree Nelson Story”.

The profits from the sales of the ski and book, $60,000.00, have been donated to the Hilaree Nelson Fund, established in collaboration with Hilaree’s partner, Jim Morrison.

With this fund, Blizzard Tecnica aims to honor her memory and the causes she championed, en- suring her work continues to make a lasting impact for years to come.

LEADER OF THE PACK:
The Hilaree Nelson Story

Story by Kim Beekman, Art by Malia Reeves and Soleil Patterson

ABOUT THE BOOK: KIMBERLY BEEKMAN

Hilaree Nelson was so extraordinary—mythical even—that we felt we could only describe her in fantastical terms, which is why we chose to tell her story in the form of a children’s fairytale. We wanted to capture her intensity, magic, and the nearly inhuman drive that fueled both her passion for the mountains and her love for her sons. She broke trail for all the women who would follow behind her, and her legacy lives on in each and every one of us.

APPLY NOW!

We are now accepting applications to distribute those funds to non-profits dedicated to initiatives that were important to Hilaree: empowering women in the outdoor space and climate change.

  1. Empowering women in the outdoors. The goal is to support women with funding to give them the opportunity to, not only, follow in Hilaree’s footsteps, but pave the way for future generations of women. We want to help them in their pursuits and for them to carry Hilaree’s torch to lead the way for other women.

  2. Climate change. As a person whose passion and career were centered in the mountains, Hilaree recognized that the effects of climate change have a huge impact on how we recreate in the outdoors. Protecting our planet was important to Hilaree, and therefore we feel it important to continue this quest in her memory.
